Job Summary:

Design Engineer is responsible for the development of both primary function and safety related systems for new machines produced. This includes designing electro-mechanical and pneumatic systems according to the appropriate domestic and international industry standards as well as internal ISO requirements.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Design of mechanical components, mechanisms and assemblies.
2. Documentation and release of details of the designs.
3. Assistance with initial assembly of prototype machines or system test beds.
4. Testing, and verification of proper machine operation, based on machine specifications.
5. Communication with internal personnel of design changes and new product function or features.
6. Support of Sales and Tech Services for newly released product and/or unusual or unexpected machine performance.

Performance Expectations (Results & Competencies):

1. Designs mechanical and pneumatic systems that meet the required specifications by the defined schedule.
2. Completes drawings and documentation in accordance with company standards.
3. Updates appropriate ISO documentation for assigned projects.
4. Continual Learning: Maintains a working knowledge of the latest ANSI, USDA and ISO standards, and insures that all design work meets those standards.
5. Continual Learning: Maintains up to date proficiency with the use of development software. (e.g. SolidWorks)
6. Initiative: Actively seeks out new technology that will help maintain a leadership position. Coordinates training and product demonstrations through Vendors and distributors.
7. Accountability: Stays focused on results in spite of distractions, interruptions, and competing demands.
8. Attention to Detail: Performs tasks with care; is thorough and checks work to ensure accuracy and completeness.
9. Recite, recognize, and utilize the lean fundamentals (6S, 8 Wastes, CSA Fundamentals House).

Job Qualifications (Education, Prior Work Experience, Skills & Knowledge):

Minimum:

• BS in engineering.
• Knowledge of 3D solid modeling.
• Knowledge of pneumatics.
• Mechanical aptitude.
• Proficient with use of Windows based operating systems and Office applications.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred

• BS in Mechanical Engineering.
• Experience in a machine building environment.
• Proficient with SolidWorks.
• Familiar with ANSI, USDA, CE, and ISO standards.
• Experienced in the design and use of pneumatic circuits and control valves.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

• Spends the majority of working hours at cubicle desk within an open office environment.
• Office noise level in the area varies from minimum to moderate.
• Occasionally required to stand or sit for long periods of time.
• 20-50% travel by standard modes of transportation, including air and automobile travel.
• A single period of travel could be as much as a month but normally no more than 2 weeks per trip.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Meets personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

• Bachelor Degree – Mechanical Engineer
• Master Degree – desired but NOT required
• 6 to 12 years mechanical design experience – machinery, gears, gearboxes, gages, fixtures and tooling
• Automotive or Aerospace Industry experience
• MUST have advanced skills with Solidworks – REQUIRED
• MUST have strong AutoCad experience
• Experience managing projects thru design, build and runoff, with ability to offer support to customer after delivery
• Strong technical aptitude, including applicable engineering tools and systems
• MUST be able to execute the design, analysis, solutions and evaluation assigned projects using solid engineering principles and business standards, practices, procedures and product/program requirements.
• Ability to contribute to developing and defining the state of the art in own technical specialty in order to anticipate, apply, adapt or develop product of quality performance, make cost improvements and provide problem resolution for current and future projects
• Ability to adhere to schedules and estimated costs
• MUST have excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work within a collaborative team environment
